BBC Sport launches 3D World Cup viewer with tactical and player perspectives

BBC Sport has launched an interactive 3D viewing platform on bbc.co.uk/3dWorldCup, available to UK viewers starting with Friday's Canada vs Bosnia-Herzegovina match at 20:00 BST.

Viewers can switch between multiple modes: broadcast view with manual camera control, tactical bird's-eye overview of the entire pitch, first-person view from a player's perspective on the field, and third-person tracking of individual players. All are available in real-time, in replays, and in post-match highlights with full recording access.

The technology harnesses official FIFA data and Immersiv.io's XR solution, reconstructing the match from skeletal data of players—similar to semi-automated offside technology. After the final whistle, users access all goals, shots and penalties in highlights mode with camera switching and live statistics.

Multi-angle viewing enables fans and analysts to study team formations, defensive positioning and decision-making throughout the match. This is particularly valuable for understanding how attacks develop and how defensive shapes respond—insights of interest to both casual viewers and betting analysts tracking tactical patterns.
