Lucas Bergvall made history for Swedish football when he became the nation's youngest World Cup player ever. The midfielder entered the match in the 64th minute of Sweden's World Cup opener against Tunisia, setting a new record at just 20 years and 132 days old.

Bergvall's age surpassed the previous Swedish record held by Jesper Blomqvist, who was 20 years and 134 days when he started Sweden's opening match at the 1994 World Cup. That mark had stood for 32 years until Bergvall's appearance in this tournament.

The midfielder made an immediate impression beyond just his record, providing an assist for Yasin Ayari's goal in Sweden's commanding 5-1 victory. "It is a milestone. I am incredibly grateful and happy for it. It was an indescribable feeling to come on and make my World Cup debut. But most importantly, we took three points," Bergvall said.

Bergvall had an outstanding 2025-26 season domestically before his selection to Sweden's World Cup squad, demonstrating the emerging talent that has attracted significant attention from top European clubs.
