Bielsa refuses to explain defiant photoshoot stance at World Cup

Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa appeared uninterested in explaining his unusually stern expression in his official FIFA World Cup portrait for the 2026 tournament. Unlike most managers who engage positively with photographers during official photoshoots, the 70-year-old Bielsa stared downward rather than into the camera.

When journalists queried his stance, suggesting it might represent a protest, Bielsa rejected the suggestion. "I don't have to give any explanation, the picture was taken the way it was taken," he said. When pressed further, he added: "There is a limit in terms of what we need to explain. If I'm wearing glasses, why am I wearing glasses?"

Bielsa, one of football's most respected coaches, is managing his third nation at a World Cup after previously leading Argentina and Chile. He is well known for his eccentric behavior, including sitting on an ice box during matches and his obsessive attention to tactical detail.

Uruguay drew their opening match 1-1 with Saudi Arabia on June 15. Their next fixture is against Cape Verde on June 23.
