Bindon creates World Cup history with mother-son debut

Tyler Bindon, 21, came on as a substitute in injury-time for New Zealand's 2-2 draw with Iran, becoming the first son to play in the same World Cup as his mother. Jenny Bindon, his mother, represented New Zealand as a goalkeeper at the 2007 and 2011 Women's World Cups and the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, earning 77 caps.

Tyler posted on Instagram: "A special day for many reasons. Proud to represent New Zealand on the biggest stage and incredibly grateful to share the moment with my mum as the first mother-son duo to play at a World Cup."

The Nottingham Forest defender was born in Auckland but moved to California aged 12 when his mother accepted a coaching role with UCLA's women's football team. He came through LA FC's academy before joining Reading in 2023 and Forest in 2025.

New Zealand face Egypt in Vancouver on 22 June in their second group match. While father-son pairings have occurred at previous World Cups, including Giovanni Reyna (USA) and Erling Haaland (Norway), the Bindons are the first mother-son duo in World Cup history.
