Broadcaster resigns over false Messi father death report

Florencia Peña announced on live television that Jorge Messi, father of Argentine star Lionel Messi, had died. The claim triggered alarm among Argentina fans during the World Cup, but was quickly contradicted by the Messi family, who issued a statement confirming Jorge is hospitalized with an undisclosed medical issue but "progressing favourably."

Peña resigned from her position at Luzu TV following the false report. "I apologise to the Messi family for the awful moment I imagine they are going through. I am deeply ashamed to have been the vehicle for this pain," she wrote on social media. She explained that production staff had provided her with incorrect information through her earpiece during the live broadcast, which she acted upon in good faith.

Luzu TV, launched in 2020 and a major news source in Argentina, issued an apology and stated that "those responsible" had been removed from their positions. The channel said: "Broadcasting sensitive information without proper prior verification is unacceptable." Multiple brands reportedly terminated sponsorships with the outlet following the incident.

Messi's mental focus may face temporary disruption during crucial World Cup group-stage fixtures. Argentina's tournament odds could shift if the psychological pressure affects team morale or player concentration in upcoming matches.
