South African coach Hugo Broos expressed frustration with FIFA's three-match suspension on midfielder Themba Zwane following a red card in the 2-0 opening defeat to Mexico on 11 June. The ban, announced 17 June, prevents Zwane from playing in South Africa's next three Group A fixtures, including Thursday's must-win match against Czech Republic at Atlanta Stadium.
"I think that the red card is too severe. I don't think it was a red card," Broos told reporters. "When I saw what happened with Messi yesterday, in Argentina's 3-0 win over Algeria, I don't agree. I think there was not even a VAR with Messi."
South Africa and Czech Republic are both searching for their opening tournament points. Mexico lead Group A with three points from their 2-0 win over South Africa, while South Korea also has three points. With Zwane sidelined, South Africa's midfield depth is significantly compromised.
Zwane's suspension removes a key midfielder from South Africa's squad, potentially affecting match odds and tactical options for their remaining Group A fixtures in pursuit of knockout qualification.
