Fulvio Collovati, a member of Italy's 1982 World Cup-winning team, launched a sharp criticism of FIFA president Gianni Infantino over the 48-team World Cup format. 'He should be ashamed,' Collovati said, calling the tournament 'a joke'.

Collovati dismissed Infantino's previous suggestion that Italy might qualify for a 64-team tournament, saying 'Jokes that don't make people laugh are not jokes.' He pointed to matches like Mexico vs South Africa and Germany vs Curacao as evidence of the format's quality issues.

Collovati stated: 'The real joke, if anything, is the 48-team World Cup, with national teams inside who do not play football.' He suggested the quality difference was so stark that he could himself play in some matches despite his age.
