Douglas Santos, defender for Zenit St Petersburg and the Brazil national team, said his selection for the 2026 World Cup squad has dramatically increased his recognition in his home country. "Now everyone knows me, as if I play for Flamengo," Santos told O Globo, noting the stark contrast with his previous level of fame.
Santos appeared in the starting lineup for Brazil's World Cup opener against Morocco on June 14, which ended in a 1-1 draw. He recalled visiting João Pessoa on a few weekends before the tournament and noticing many more people approaching him than usual, both at the airport and on the streets.
The 26-year-old has been Zenit's captain since 2019 and appeared in 25 matches last season, scoring two goals and winning his sixth championship title with the Russian club.
Brazil compete in Group C alongside Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland. The squad's next match is scheduled for June 20 against Haiti.
