Barrow supporters planning to display their club badge at the World Cup encountered an unexpected obstacle when FIFA rejected their flag application. The flag featured the St George cross alongside Barrow's club badge and a submarine silhouette—the town's iconic symbol owing to its centuries-long submarine and shipbuilding heritage.
FIFA's rejection letter stated: "The application was rejected because the item includes imagery of weapons or military (submarine). These are not permitted under FIFA policy." Fan John Little, heading to Boston for England's upcoming group match, expressed frustration at the decision, calling it "harsh" and questioning whether the submarine restriction extended to items purchased locally.
FIFA offered to approve the flag if the submarine imagery is covered or removed before resubmission. Barrow's submarine manufacturing and shipbuilding industry remains central to the town's economy and employment, making the symbol deeply significant to its residents and the club's supporters.
All flags displayed at World Cup stadiums require FIFA approval. Military and weaponry imagery are currently prohibited under tournament policy, a rule enforced at the stadiums during group matches and continuing through the knockout rounds.
