Iran coach slams FIFA as visa restrictions force 'most oppressed' World Cup team

Following Iran's 2-2 draw with New Zealand, coach Galeneoi revealed extraordinary logistical obstacles unprecedented at the World Cup. The federation president was denied a visa to the United States, as were the team manager and media officer, forcing Galeneoi to perform duties beyond his coaching responsibilities.

'It's a catastrophe,' Galeneoi told RMC Sport. 'We were supposed to arrive in Los Angeles two nights before the match, but we were forbidden. We planned to stay and recover after the game, leave the next day — again refused. I want to say that the Iranian national team is possibly the most oppressed team in the history of international tournaments.'

Iran is forced to base operations in Tijuana, Mexico, and travel to US venues only for matches before immediately returning across the border. Striker Mehdi Taremi described the situation as stressful for players and criticized FIFA for providing insufficient support to the Iranian delegation, while thanking the Iranian diaspora in Los Angeles for their backing.

Iran faces Belgium on June 21 in Group G, continuing their tournament from the same logistical constraints. Despite the off-field obstacles, the team secured a draw against New Zealand in their opening match.

Iran's logistical disadvantage and documented player stress could impact match performance and tournament odds in Group G. Bettors may view the squad as potential underperformers relative to their playing caliber, given restricted preparation and recovery between competitive fixtures.
