Late penalty rescues South Africa against Czech Republic

Czech Republic took the lead through Michal Sadilek's smart finish in the sixth minute at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. However, with nine minutes remaining, referee Tori Penso awarded a penalty for Pavel Sulc's handball, which Tebohо Mokoena converted to level the match.

South Africa had struggled to create clear chances throughout, with Thapelo Maseko's blocked effort being their most promising prior to the penalty. Czech goalkeeper Matej Kovar made crucial saves, including denying Patrick Schick twice.

The 1-1 result leaves both teams with one point from two matches in Group A. South Africa remains in contention despite losing their opener 0-2 to Mexico, while both sides can still accumulate four points, which would likely guarantee knockout-stage qualification.

With both teams on one point, Group A qualification odds will shift to reflect the tighter three-team race for advancement to the knockout stage.
