Qatar manager Julen Lopetegi has become only the third coach in football history to appear as a goalkeeper at one World Cup and later manage a national team at a different World Cup.
Stanislav Cherchesov was Russia's goalkeeper at the 1994 World Cup and managed Russia at the 2018 World Cup. Ricardo La Volpe was listed in Argentina's squad for the 1978 World Cup (did not play) and managed Mexico at the 2006 World Cup.
Lopetegi achieved this rare milestone after Qatar's 1-1 draw with Switzerland on 13 June 2026.
