The 2026 World Cup opened at Mexico City's Azteca stadium with a vibrant ceremony celebrating local culture and global music. International stars Shakira, J Balvin, Burna Boy, Danny Ocean and Fher Olvera performed. Mexican singer Fernández sang the national anthem, while South African star Tyla performed hers.
Performers on stage wore indigenous Mexican clothing, while others in all-gold costumes held giant golden footballs above their heads. The packed stadium filled with fans in Mexico team colours, with thousands throwing their sombreros into the air as the match began.
This marked Mexico's first World Cup at home in 40 years. Attendee Javier Pérez said: "We had hospitality tickets and it's a unique experience. I've never been to a World Cup before, so bringing my family is wonderful. I just want Mexico to win and score many goals."
Tyla will perform at the USA opening ceremony in Los Angeles alongside Katy Perry, Future, Lisa and Anitta. The 2026 World Cup is co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, each staging its opening ceremony.
