Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, aged 40 years and 79 days, became the oldest German player ever to compete in a major international tournament during his team's World Cup Group E clash with Curaçao on 14 June.
Neuer surpassed the previous record held by Lothar Matthäus, who was 39 years and 91 days old when he played for Germany at Euro 2000 against Portugal.
The Bayern Munich veteran, who was cleared to feature after addressing recent injury concerns, took his place in the starting lineup for the tournament's opening match in the Group E fixture.
Neuer's milestone highlights his enduring career longevity at the sport's highest level. Germany's Group E campaign also includes fixtures against Ivory Coast and Ecuador.
