Manuel Neuer, Germany's goalkeeper, reflected on his fifth World Cup appearance following Germany's 7-1 Group E victory over Curaçao in Houston. The 38-year-old custodian emphasised the significance of strong tournament starts after his side's group-stage exits in their previous two World Cup campaigns.
"This game very much pleased us, and the substitutes added strength," Neuer stated. "This was not the demolition of Brazil in the semi-final of a World Cup, but a first-round match with Curaçao... But it was very important to start well in the tournament. We did that, so we are pleased."
Neuer became the oldest German player at a major tournament at the 2026 World Cup. He reflected on his career arc: "I remember my first World Cup match—with Australia in 2010. Now I am impressed as if this is my first tournament. You either love football or you don't... This fifth World Cup is so important to me."
The goalkeeper's continued role as first-choice keeper underscores Germany's confidence in his leadership and experience through the tournament's demanding schedule and knockout stages.
