Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has questioned FIFA's VAR handling after Switzerland's controversial penalty decision in their Group B opener against Qatar on 13 June 2026.
In the 17th minute, Remo Freuler appeared to be in an offside position when fouled by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada. The referee awarded a penalty, which Breel Embolo converted for Switzerland's opening goal in their eventual 1-1 draw.
Neville told BBC: "The camera is not positioned exactly along the line of the incident. But why have we still not been shown the convincing evidence that FIFA claims to have that there truly was an offside?"
Contentious VAR decisions on offside determinations directly affect betting markets, where goal validity and match results determine odds adjustments and payouts on disputed outcomes.
