Pochettino: MLS lacks competitive culture required for World Cup

USA coach Mauricio Pochettino criticized the MLS system for failing to create a competitive culture that drives excellence. Speaking ahead of Friday's World Cup group-stage match against Australia in Seattle, Pochettino highlighted a fundamental cultural difference between American club football and international competition.

'Their culture is a game. They want to play. We told them: playing football is one thing, competing is completely different. These are two different sports,' Pochettino said, according to El Pais.

Pochettino explained that MLS lacks promotion and relegation, meaning teams face no severe consequences for poor performance. 'If there are no goals, I won't fight. If I lost – what happens? Nothing. They just fire the coach,' he noted, arguing that American sport rewards losing teams rather than punishing failure.

The USA face Australia on Friday in Group D. Pochettino's comments highlight the mental adjustment MLS players must make at the World Cup, where failure carries permanent tournament consequences.
