Roberto 'Pico' Lopes, a defender from Shamrock Rovers, anchored Cape Verde's historic defence in their 0-0 draw against Spain at Atlanta on June 15. The 40-year-old's performance drew comparisons with Ireland's Paul McGrath's celebrated display against Italy in 1994.
Lopes described the moment as among his team's greatest achievements, stating: 'It's a point at the World Cup against Spain. Sometimes you have to allow yourself to enjoy it. Yeah, we can play better, but it's a clean sheet against one of the best teams in the world.'
The centre-back faced Spain's relentless attacking with composure, notably standing firm during the final minute when Spain won their 11th corner. Lopes acknowledged remaining 'rusty' but highlighted the collective effort required to contain one of tournament favourites.
Cape Verde's defensive resilience against a top-seeded nation signals stronger tournament prospects than pre-tournament odds suggested, with the team's Group H standing improving significantly following the result.
