Mohamed Salah provided the assist for Emam Ashour's opening goal in Egypt's Group G match against Belgium on June 15. Ashour's finish put Egypt ahead, but an own goal by Mohamed Hani brought the match level at 1-1.
Salah's assist on his birthday marks a historic achievement: the first such contribution by an African footballer at a World Cup since statistics began in 1966. Salah started the match and was substituted in the 76th minute.
Despite Egypt's early lead, the own goal denied them a first-ever World Cup victory. The draw leaves Egypt with one point in Group G against Belgium.
