Socceroos battle fatigue after historic Turkey win, eye USA clash

Australia defeated Turkey 2-0 in their opening World Cup match in Vancouver, with Connor Metcalfe scoring in the 75th minute. Turkey had been regarded as dark horses before the tournament, making Australia's win one of the Socceroos' greatest World Cup victories.

The team endured grueling logistics, bussing from the stadium after midnight and departing Vancouver airport at 2 a.m. Players did not arrive at their Oakland training base until 5 a.m. on June 15. Metcalfe said: "The game was pretty late in general and usually after games I struggle to sleep. It's pretty unusual to fly straight back, especially being so late."

Metcalfe reported severe sleep deprivation: "I had about four or five hours of sleep, I'm just pretty knackered to be honest, I need a good day off tomorrow and then get back into it." The starting XI had an average age of 24, with defender Cam Burgess at 30 the oldest player.

Australia face the tournament co-hosts United States in Seattle on Friday (Saturday AEST). Sleep deprivation and jet lag from the overnight journey may impact the team's freshness and recovery against a rested opponent.
