Spain's Ólmo warns of no error margin after Cape Verde stalemate

Spain midfielder Daniel Ólmo expressed concern after the opening stalemate, stating: "The debut didn't go as we wanted. We understand what we did well and what to improve. At the World Cup there's no right to error—everything is maximum." Despite commanding possession and generating numerous chances, Spain could not penetrate Cape Verde's resolute defensive shape.

Spain's statistical dominance was overwhelming: 27 shots (7 on target), 2.29 expected goals (xG), and 74% possession. Yet goalkeeper Vozinha's seven saves, combined with disciplined defending from centre-backs Diney Borges and Pico Lopes, frustrated Spain's offensive ambitions throughout the 90 minutes.

Ólmo reaffirmed the squad's commitment, saying: "We showed what we're capable of, and we'll prove it again. No doubt—with this team to the end. Forward, Spain." The midfielder's resolve reflects determination to correct their approach for upcoming fixtures in Group E.

Spain's second match against Uruguay on June 18 becomes critical. The expanded 12-team format means a second draw or defeat would seriously jeopardise their knockout qualification prospects from the group stage.

Spain's conversion inefficiency against Cape Verde may shift odds for Spain-Uruguay; if Uruguay adopts defensive tactics, market expectations for lower-scoring outcomes could adjust accordingly.
