Stones returns to England setup after contemplating retirement

Stones played just 439 minutes of Premier League football last season across 18 games for Manchester City, missing two months with a thigh injury. He revealed last October he had considered retirement during his struggles.

Tuchel selected Stones over Harry Maguire and Levi Colwill for the squad. Stones has started alongside Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa in England's latest friendly and is in line to start the Croatia match over City teammate Marc Guehi.

Stones told BBC Sport: "It was a difficult period when I said that [about retiring] and I hope I don't get to that again... I really had to dig deep. I feel like one of my greatest achievements is to keep coming back from those setbacks."

England's defensive odds and tournament odds may adjust following Stones' confirmed participation; his return from injury impacts the backline's depth and consistency.
