Tori Penso becomes second female official at men's World Cup

Tori Penso of the United States will become the second female referee to take charge of a men's FIFA World Cup match when she officiates Czech Republic versus South Africa in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 18. The 39-year-old is assigned to the Group A contest as both teams seek their first points of the tournament.

Penso's appointment follows Stéphanie Frappart of France, who became the first woman to referee a men's World Cup match when she supervised Germany's 4–2 victory over Costa Rica during the 2022 Qatar finals.

The role demonstrates FIFA's continued push for gender diversity in officiating at the sport's premier tournament.
