Tuchel: England won't abandon style despite World Cup heat

Thomas Tuchel confirmed England will stick to their trademark physicality and aggressive play in tonight's World Cup Group L opener against Croatia in Dallas, dismissing suggestions that extreme heat would force a tactical shift. The England manager said sacrificing the team's strengths would be counterproductive, even with temperatures expected to exceed 30°C.

Tuchel explained that his 26-man squad was specifically selected for strength and powerful running, reflecting his tactical philosophy since taking the England job in January 2025. "They want to be active with the ball," he told BBC Sport. "We have a young group. We have a courageous group. We have a brave group of players. So let's go for it. I'm just not ready to adapt into a different style because of circumstances we cannot influence. I think we would just give up our strengths."

The head coach noted that mandatory three-minute hydration breaks will effectively divide matches into quarters, giving coaches opportunities to deliver messages and reset tactics. However, he believes playing at Dallas Stadium—one of the tournament's air-conditioned indoor venues—will help offset heat-related challenges and allow England to impose their style effectively.
