Vozinha, Cape Verde's goalkeeper who made seven saves in Monday's draw against Spain, will be reunited with his mother Ana Candida Evora ahead of Sunday's World Cup match against Uruguay in Miami. Evora had initially been unable to attend due to the cost of obtaining a US visa, as Cape Verde citizens face a refundable visa deposit of approximately £11,000.
US House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries intervened directly after learning of Evora's situation. "No mother should miss the chance to see her child make history," Jeffries posted on social media. He coordinated with Secretary of State Marco Rubio to ensure the mother could attend.
The State Department confirmed visa fees have been waived for Evora, 40. A US State Department official stated: "We can confirm our visa team in Praia is in close touch with her and providing the needed services." Travel arrangements are being finalized for the match on 21 June.
Vozinha has become a World Cup cult hero following his seven-save performance against Spain, earning widespread praise and attracting millions of new social media followers. The goalkeeper has earned 91 caps for Cape Verde.
