World Cup introduces VAR power to overturn mistaken identity calls

A new video assistant referee regulation has been introduced at the 2026 World Cup permitting referees to overturn yellow card decisions when VAR identifies mistaken player identification. Former Russian Premier League referee Igor Fedotov explained the rule change following its application during the USA versus Paraguay match on June 12, which the USA won 4-1.

'This is a new development that will become widespread after the World Cup. Before, referees were not permitted to do this,' Fedotov said. He clarified VAR's expanded scope: 'In cases of misidentification of the player who committed an infraction, VAR can now intervene.' Referee Danny McClelley implemented the new rule during the USA-Paraguay match, establishing a World Cup precedent.

The rule modification is expected to be adopted in the Russian Premier League following the tournament's conclusion.
