World Cup top squads face record fatigue after consecutive tournaments

Seventy-four World Cup players featured in last summer's expanded Club World Cup. Many barely rested across three summers: Euro 2024, Club World Cup 2025, and now the World Cup. The tournament schedule eliminated recovery windows, forcing elite players into back-to-back competition.

France leads all top-10 nations: 1,341 matches and 98,895 minutes total in the past year. Portugal second: 1,299 matches and 96,405 minutes. The Club World Cup involved 11 French and 11 Portuguese players; Germany sent the most with 12.

Among France players, defender Maxence Lacroix (26, Crystal Palace) logged the highest load: 58 starts for 5,009 minutes. Bayern Munich forward Michael Olise appeared 65 times but came off the bench 12 times, totalling 4,942 minutes. PSG midfielder Vitinha made 66 appearances and reached the Club World Cup final.

France's extreme fatigue load (1,341 matches in 12 months) shapes their early tournament play: depleted squads run slower, play more cautiously and take fewer attacking risks. Lower totals favour France's opening matches.
