Atlético Madrid and Spain national team midfielder Alex Baena has revealed the profound difficulties he faced after his 2023 conflict with Real Madrid's Federico Valverde. Baena stated that the worst aspect was his family receiving death threats and late-night calls.
The conflict reportedly stemmed from an insult Baena made towards Valverde during a match, leading to Valverde physically assaulting him in a parking lot. Baena filed a police report, but the lawsuit was dismissed.
Baena credited a psychologist with helping him through the ordeal, admitting he might not be playing today without that support. He is currently with the Spain squad for the 2026 World Cup, preparing for their Round of 16 match against Austria on July 2.
