Divine Lunga, a 31‑year‑old Zimbabwean international who also plays for South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, survived a gun attack on Sunday in the Hillbrow suburb of Johannesburg.
Lunga was travelling with his younger brother to church when an unknown gunman opened fire on their vehicle, apparently mistaking him for an undercover police officer.
South African police confirmed the incident, stating that the case is being investigated as attempted murder, but no arrests have been made so far.
The attack highlights the high crime rates in South Africa, though Lunga emerged physically unharmed.
Betting angle: The incident may prompt Zimbabwe to reconsider Lunga’s availability for upcoming World Cup qualifiers, potentially affecting odds on Zimbabwe’s attacking options.
