Jürgen Klopp Confirms Talks to Become Germany Head Coach

Jürgen Klopp has confirmed he is in negotiations to take over as Germany’s coach, stating he has "recharged" the energy missing when he left Liverpool. Klopp is the German football federation’s preferred candidate after Julian Nagelsmann resigned on Friday, four days after Germany lost on penalties to Paraguay in the World Cup last 32.

Speaking from New York, Klopp said, "Julian has stepped down and the [federation] is working on the succession and has approached me in the course of those considerations." He added that talks would take time due to his contract as the head of global soccer for Red Bull’s network of clubs.

Klopp, who has not coached since leaving Liverpool in 2024, said, "About two years ago I stopped at Liverpool and said that I lacked the energy for another job or for another year with Liverpool. Since then I’m more than recharged, I’m ready." He emphasized the need for "intensive talks" with the federation to agree on how to fundamentally change the team's fortunes, as Germany has not reached the last 16 in three consecutive men’s World Cups.

Jürgen Klopp, born 16 June 1967, is 59 years old and was a forward during his playing career, spending his entire senior spell at Mainz 05. After stepping down from Liverpool in 2024, where he secured the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, Klopp has agreed to become the new head coach of the Germany national football team. He has not yet managed a national side.
