England captain Harry Kane had the clearest opportunity to break the deadlock in the final moments but sent his shot high over as the Three Lions were held to a goalless draw by Ghana on Tuesday. "We're disappointed we didn't win," Kane said. "Ghana played a very low compact block which made it difficult to progress through the middle of the pitch."
Kane was pragmatic about his miss. "I've been a striker a long time and I know that not every chance goes in. Nine times out of ten I'm confident, but today luck wasn't with us." England created several openings in the second half after tactical substitutions but lacked clinical finishing to convert them.
With Panama to come in the group finale, Kane said the team remained in control despite the unexpected stalemate. "We still have an excellent chance to top the group," he added. England's group position is now more competitive than anticipated after the opening 4-2 win over Croatia.
Kane's goal drought (0 open-play goals in two matches) may reduce England's odds in goalscorer markets if the trend continues into knockout football.
