Popovic receives FA backing after Socceroos exit

Football Australia chief executive Martin Kugeler has backed Socceroos coach Tony Popovic despite the team's Round of 16 exit to Egypt.

Kugeler stated, "Every fan believes he’s a great national coach, right?" clarifying he was referring to a fan, not the coach.

Popovic faces criticism for substitutions, including bringing on Maty Ryan and asking 18-year-old Lucas Herrington to take a crucial penalty.

The coach has the support of his employers and players, but questions remain about his tactical approach and reliance on defensive structures.

Tony Popovic, 53, central defender. He began his senior career with Sydney United 58, then played for Sanfrecce Hiroshima, Crystal Palace and finished his playing days with Perth Glory. He earned 58 caps for the Australian senior national team, scoring four goals, and also represented the U‑23 side.
