Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo, 29, received a five-match suspension from FIFA's disciplinary committee for serious foul play. The ban relates to a tackle on Canada midfielder Ismael Kone in Qatar's 6-0 Group B defeat on June 19.
Kone suffered fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his lower left leg. The Sassuolo player underwent surgery and will miss the remainder of the tournament. Madibo was sent off during the match for the original challenge.
Madibo visited Kone in hospital after the match. The suspension will prevent the Qatar midfielder from competing in remaining World Cup fixtures and is subject to appeal.
Kone's season-ending injury and Madibo's five-match ban reduce squad depth for both nations in knockout stages; markets assessing Canada and Qatar's knockout odds have reflected these squad losses.
