Footage circulating on social media appears to show England left-back Djed Spence declining to shake hands with Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey before their Group L World Cup match at Gillette Stadium in Boston on Tuesday. Partey was booed by England supporters as he made his first World Cup appearance after missing Ghana's opening match.
Partey, 33, had been denied entry to Canada before Ghana's first match. The Villarreal midfielder faces seven rape charges and one sexual assault count relating to allegations from four women between 2020 and 2022, and pleaded not guilty with trial scheduled for next year.
US Customs and Border Protection confirmed Partey had not been convicted and was issued a US visa. The Football Association did not discuss pre-match handshake protocols with players before the match. Partey's touches of the ball during the 0-0 draw were regularly met with jeers from the crowd.
