Thomas Tuchel has highlighted defensive positioning as a critical area for improvement ahead of England's World Cup match against Ghana in Boston on June 23. After England's 4-2 victory over Croatia, Tuchel identified specific lapses in formation and tactical discipline.
'We dropped a little too deep from a middle block into a low block and deep block. We went a bit too early and were too man-focused,' Tuchel said. 'When we conceded our second goal, we played a back seven formation, which is not us. It makes no sense and doesn't play to our strengths.'
Tuchel stressed the need to manage possession better and execute attacking transitions with greater precision. He noted that England's strengths lie in aggressive, structured football rather than defensive depth. 'We don't need to invent anything new. We need to manage these ball wins better and show more confidence in what makes us strong,' the manager added.
A win over Ghana would secure England's top spot in Group L with one match remaining, putting them through to the last 32.
